Crockpot Chicken n' Dumplings

3 pounds chicken

DUMPLINGS:
3/4 cup flour
3 tablespoons butter
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda

Put chicken in pot, cover with water. Salt. Cook high, 3-4 hours. Drain off every bit of fat possible. Add a few veggies of choice, and season to taste. Cook an additional hour or two. During the last hour, add dumplings. For dumplings: Mix dry ingredients. Mix in shortening. When blended, add remaining ingredients. Dough should be very stiff, just workable. Drop dough into broth by heaping tablespoonfuls. Cook dumplings for...say about 1/2 hour at least.
