Soft Oatmeal Cookies

2 cups packed brown sugar
1 cup shortening
3 eggs
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup sour milk
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts

In a large mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flour, salt, baking powder, soda and cinnamon; add alternately with milk to the creamed mixture. Stir in oats, raisins and nuts. Drop by heaping tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350F for about 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to a cooling rack. Makes about 5 dozen. Note: to sour milk, place 1 tbl. white vinegar in a measuring cup; add enough milk to equal 1 cup.)
