Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage
3 T. bacon grease or cooking oil
1 large head of red cabbage, shredded; about 6 cups
3 medium unpeeled apples, cubed; about 3 cups
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup vinegar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 teaspoon caraway seed
dash of pepper
Heat cooking oil or bacon drippings in large skillet. Add red cabbage and
apples. Combine brown sugar, water, vinegar, salt, caraway seed and pepper. Pour
vinegar mixture over cabbage.
Cover skillet tightly and cook over low heat stirring occasionally till cabbage
and apple are tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. |
