Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

2 T. oil or shortening
1/2 lb. ground meat
1 onion, finely chopped (we used a medium-sized onion, about 3/4 cup chopped)
1 6 oz. can tomato paste
1 1/2 C. water
3 T. vinegar
1/4 C. sweet relish
1 t. salt
1 t. chili powder
1 or 2 t. prepared mustard
1/8 t. pepper
Dash cayenne pepper

Heat oil in saucepan. Brown meat and onion together, breaking meat up in fine pieces. Stir in tomato paste, water, vinegar, relish and salt. Simmer for 25 minutes. Blend in chili powder, mustard and peppers. Simmer for 5 minutes more.

Makes 1 1/2 cups to 2 cups of sauce -- enough for about 12 hot dogs.
