Almond Jewels
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter or regular margarine
3/4 cup sifted brown sugar -- firmly packed
1 egg
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup chopped almonds
Gumdrops
Almonds -- for tops
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cream butter; add sugar
gradually; cream until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla;
stir in chopped nuts. Add dry ingredients and mix. Drop teaspoonfuls
of dough 1-1/2- to 2-in. apart onto lightly greased baking sheet.
Decorate tops with pieces of bright gumdrops (not licorice) and
insert lengthwise slices of almonds in cookie centers. Bake in
moderate oven (350') 12 to 15 minutes. Cool cookies on racks.
